GoUpstate.com and a GridFox fix
A few weeks ago, the Spartanburg Herald-Journal launched a redesign of their site. It’s a clean design that makes great use of whitespace. Last night I received a note from the Online Director there with a little more information about the redesign. It was great to hear that he followed a 14-column grid for his new layout. It seems designing with grids is becoming a popular trend, especially in newspaper web design.

I decided to check the grid on their site with GridFox, my Firefox plugin which can overlay a grid on any website. And… it didn’t work. There was a bug which caused the grid to only cover the top 50px of the site, most likely having something to do with how the page had been coded. It was a simple fix and now GridFox should be compatible with even more sites. If you’re using GridFox, please take a second to download version 1.1. And if you have any other great examples of grid-based design you’d like to see featured on the GridFox page, feel free to leave a comment or email me.

this is complicated.. this is the first time i heard about GridFox.. will have a try..
I love GridFox. Thanks! I’ve been trying to hammer our site into a decent design since I started working here, and GridFox is proving to be a great tool.
No mention of compatibility with Firefox 3, but I’ll give it a shot.
Me again. Only problem in FF3 seems to be that “Show Grid” doesn’t toggle correctly. I can’t turn it off.
er, um, never mind. Refresh removes it. Duh.
Jorge- does clicking on the grid with the mouse (left click) also remove the grid?
I love this plugin and use it quite a bit. What a great idea! Just one question (or suggestion/feature request?)…
Is there a way to assign a keyboard command to toggle the grid? Bringing up the menu to access it each and every time is laborious after a while. I’m on Leopard OSX and went to my prefs to assign a key combo but it doesn’t work. The command shows up next to Gridfox’s menu item, but pushing the keys does nothing except bring up the built in search bar at the bottom of the window. :(
