GridFox 2.0 alpha release
Download GridFox 2.0 Alpha release
This is an alpha release and is expected to have bugs. If you run across any problems, please feel free to email me at eric@puidokas.com, or leave a comment below.
Shared Grids
Grids are now shared between all GridFox users. Just try going to Yahoo! News, or Wired. When you toggle GridFox, the correct grids will automatically be loaded from the gridfox.info servers.
Whenever you save a grid, it gets saved for that domain for all users. No need to setup the grid on every computer you use. And the hassle of changing the settings back and forth when you’re working on 2 different sites is gone.
New interface
The preferences dialog has been slimmed down to only include the most basic options not related to to settings up your grid.
With this release, you get even more control over your grid. You can now set different line/gutter widths for vertical and horizontal. I’ve also added the ability to offset the grid, so if your site isn’t perfectly left, center, or right aligned its not a problem.
Grid browsing
You can also create multiple grids per site. So if one page has a different grid than another, just save them both. You can use arrows to scroll through all the grids for a domain. And if you want to make sure GridFox always show you the correct grid, just remember to lock it.

Does this also support local URLs for development machines?
If there’s no domain name to associate the grid with, GridFox will save the grid in your browser. The one caveat is that you can only have one grid saved this way at a time.
Well, the earlier betas didn’t work for me, so I took a chance and downloaded the alpha. It works! Can’t wait to start using it.
@pudoikas: i’d rather have many grids available even if there’s no domain to saciate them with. otherwise gridfox2 won’t be such a wonderful tool for webdesigners…
Just a suggestion… or a question on how to find it if it already exists…
Is there a horizontal offset? Because my site is left aligned, but with a margin of 10px from the left… so I want my columns to start 10px in.
Just a thought.
it is possible to load predefined grid setting (by menu or anything else) for various CSS grid system such 960gs, blueprint etc ?
I second Ketan. The real advantage of this plugin would be to support Blueprint and 960gs
Hi Eric, is there any chance you might be able to continue development of this great (and unique, afaik) plugin? If not, would you oppose to someone else picking up the torch to run with it?
@Ketan, that’s a great idea. I’ll try to get a new beta out there with that feature.
@JGarrido, the alpha has been out for a while and gone through some revisions. This last version hasn’t had any issues yet, so I’ll take it out of beta soon. Are there any specific features you’re looking for in the next version?
can you port this to google chrome?
When you indicate that grids are SHARED btwn all gridfox users are you referring to the fact that everyone who has this plugin installed is sharing a grid for a particular domain?
@DJones, that’s correct
There needs to be an check box option “display columns”. What if I just want the vertical rows?
The 1 to 2 second wait for the grid to load in this version is a huge drawback in this version. Considering I hit the refresh button about 10,000 times in the process of developing a site, having to reload the grid on every refresh is a substantial amount of time.
Other than that, thanks for the great plugin, but please fix this feature!
Thanks for the feedback Jesse! I’ll see what I can do about those.
btw, if you can’t wait for me to figure out a way to speed up the grid loading, you can always turn off the shared grid functionality. Just check the “Don’t save grids for each domain” option in the GridFox > Preferences menu.

I’m a bit stumped. How does one actually build the grid? When I toggle the grid, I get a few icons in the lower right of the overlay, but they are all grayed out and not clickable.
I guess my question is, once I turn it on, how do I actually MAKE the grid overlay?
@DA The leftmost icon should allow you create a new grid. If it’s grayed out, there’s a bug. Could you tell me which version of Firefox you’re using, as well as which domain you’re trying to make a grid for?
You could also go into GridFox > Preferences and check “Don’t save grids for each domain” to see if that helps.
What would be the code for the 960.gs using varied columns?
In answer to my above question i’ve found if i use varied and set 10,40,10,10,40,10,10,40,10,10,40,10,10,40,10,10,40,10,10,40,10,10,40,10,10,40,10,10,40,10,10,40,10,10,40,10,10,40,10,10,40,10,10,40,10,10,40,10
i get the 960 grid :)
I’d like to request the option to have the grid stay turn on even after a page refresh. I’m using http://xrefresh.binaryage.com/ for development and this would help a lot as i wouldn’t need to keep re-enabling the grid everytime!
Btw, in my above post for the 960 grid make sure you set the line gutter width to 1px
Please let email me when you’ve made GridFox available for Firefox 4. I love this addon and use it all the time. Thx!
Is there any way to work on the website while Gridfox is turned on? I would like to scroll the page down for example, but seems like gridfox locks the firefox tab. Is that the case?

Simply by increased medical studies, many people hold, their kids would be able to obtain many different types to do with sensible skill-sets as well as handy expertise, which will
The grid is automatically loaded. But is it possible to see the properties of that existing grid?
Hi Eric Puidokas, thanks for this great extension
i have a feature request, after creating a grid it should be possible to hover over a crosspoint or a gridline to get its x,y position in px and %.
Thanks, Lilo
